Statue of Liberty

A Beacon of Freedom, Lighting the World.

About this place

A global icon of freedom, the Statue of Liberty rises majestically in New York Harbor, her torch held high as a beacon of hope. Gifted by France in 1886, this UNESCO World Heritage Site symbolizes democracy and friendship between nations. Designed by Frédéric Bartholdi and engineered by Gustave Eiffel, Lady Liberty’s copper façade towers 305 feet (93 meters) from pedestal to torch, her crown’s seven spikes representing the seven continents and seas. Visitors ascend her pedestal or crown for sweeping views of Manhattan, while the on-site museum delves into her history and the immigrant experience at nearby Ellis Island. A testament to resilience, she underwent major restorations, including post-9/11 security upgrades. More than a monument, she embodies the enduring ideals of liberty, opportunity, and human dignity.
